title Lecture - Oh, Brave New World? The Union of England and Scotland in 1603 by Dr Jenny Wormald, St Hilda's College, Oxford
details The day of 24 March 1603 witnessed a stunning event: James VI became James VI and I. The British Isles were at last united, under a king with the wrong nationality, the wrong accent, the wrong experience of kingship. Thus the English saw it. The Scots rejoiced until they realised the level of English hostility to union, and began to worry about neglect. The lecture will examine the leading players at this key moment in British history, how they coped with the unpalatable challenge created in 1603, and why the ramshackle union survived.

Tickets are 2 per lecture, or 5 for the series of three. Available from The University of Edinburgh Centre, 7-11 Nicolson Street, EH8 9BE (0131 650 2252) or from St Giles Cathedral Gift Shop.
