title Lecture: The Union of the Crowns: a Challenge to English Culture
details Lecture by Professor Conrad Russell, King's College, University of London.

The attempt of James VI and I to create a ‘perfect union’ – a single state – of Great Britain was carelessly threatening to England’s sense of national identity, the integrity of common law and the very nature of authority. The ‘fundamental laws’ of England were seen to be under attack. Scots and English viewed the union very differently. The English thought little about the new relationship into which they had entered in 1603. Indeed, this failure often prevented them from admitting that that had entered into any new relationship at all.

Tickets are £2 per lecture, or £5 for the series of three. Available from The University of Edinburgh Centre, 7-11 Nicolson Street, EH8 9BE (0131 650 2252) or from St Giles Cathedral Gift Shop.
