Huntly Castle's doorway has a splendid heraldic frontispiece which was added by the 1st Marquis of Huntly in the late 16th century. It is unique in the country at this period. From bottom to top the frontispiece begins with the arms of the Marquis of Huntly and his wife, Henrietta Stewart; above this are the arms of King James VI and his queen, Anne of Denmark. Finally two panels of contemplative note. The first refers to the Passion and Resurrection of Our Lord; the second is of the St. Michael group portraying the final triumph of Good over Evil. Both these panels were badly defaced by one of the Covenanting army which occupied the castle in 1640. The castle contains other armorial panels, for example, the great heraldic fireplace in the hall of the Marchioness's Lodging. • Historic Scotland link |
