Dirleton Castle is situated 4 km south west of North Berwick in East Lothian. The original castle was built in the 13th century by the de Vaux family and it has been greatly added to later. Dirleton was badly damaged during the Wars of Independence and only the large, round main tower survives largely intact. The Castle, built on a rocky mound is surrounded by attractive gardens. John Hallyburton instructed major additions to the Castle in the early 14th century. Further changes were made by the Hallyburtons till early 16th century and then by the Ruthvens. • Historic Scotland link |
